Healthy teeth and gums are built on small habits repeated every day. You do not need a complicated routine. These five simple steps are a good place to start.
Your Everyday Routine
- Brush twice a day for two minutes. Use a soft toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste, and take your time to reach every surface.
- Clean between your teeth. Floss or interdental brushes remove plaque from areas a toothbrush cannot reach.
- Think about sugar. Sugary snacks and drinks feed the bacteria that cause decay, so try to keep them to mealtimes rather than sipping or snacking all day.
- Drink plenty of water. Water helps rinse away food and keeps your mouth comfortable, especially after meals.
- Replace your toothbrush regularly. A good rule is every three months, or sooner if the bristles look worn.
Gentle technique matters as much as time. Brushing too hard can irritate your gums, so use light pressure and short, circular motions along the gumline.
Do Not Skip Your Check-Ups
Even with excellent habits at home, regular dental visits are important. Your dentist and hygienist can clean areas that are hard to reach, notice early changes and give advice that is tailored to you.
If your gums bleed when you brush, if you notice a persistent bad taste or if something simply does not feel right, it is worth booking an appointment rather than waiting.
Small changes add up. Pick one habit to focus on this week, and add another when it feels natural. Over time, your daily routine can make a real difference to how your mouth feels and looks.
